Forged from C45 carbon steel, the European equivalent to AISI 1045 carbon steel, the maul head contains approximately 0.45% carbon, offering an excellent balance of toughness and edge retention. Every Tatanka maul is hand forged and hand finished before being heat treated, oil quenched and tempered along the cutting edge to produce outstanding durability for repeated heavy impact work.

The 900mm hickory handle provides outstanding leverage and natural shock absorption, allowing greater striking force while maintaining control. The combination of the 3kg splitting head and hammer poll makes it ideal for splitting large timber and driving splitting wedges when required.

How to Care

1. Maintain the original bevel angle when sharpening using a fine axe file followed by a sharpening stone.
2. Keep the maul head clean and dry after use and apply axe wax, boiled linseed oil or a light maintenance oil to help prevent rust.
3. Treat the hickory handle periodically with natural linseed oil or axe wax to help prevent drying and splitting.
4. Always store the maul in a cool, dry place with a suitable leather sheath fitted.
5. Inspect the head and handle before each use to ensure they remain secure and free from damage.
