Winter is pruning season. We compare every STIHL battery pole pruner we sell, from the homeowner HTA 30 and HTA 50 to the professional HTA 100, HTA 150 and HTA 160, so you can pick the right reach, power and battery.
Once the leaves are down, the next few months are the best time to prune: you can see the structure of the tree, sap is low, and there's no nesting to worry about. A battery pole pruner lets you do it from the ground, with no ladder, no fuel and far less noise than a petrol machine.
STIHL now makes battery pole pruners across three battery systems, and the range has grown recently with new professional AP models. This guide covers all of them: who each one is for, what the specifications really mean, and which battery to buy. Specifications are taken from STIHL and from the product pages on this site.
Quick Recommendations
STIHL HTA 50
Up to 280 cm of reach, the first pole pruner in the AK System, and light enough for fruit trees and ornamentals. The sensible homeowner choice.
STIHL HTA 150
A short, rigid 196 cm shaft with 1.4 kW of power and a 30 cm bar. Control and cutting power for thinning and orchard work.
STIHL HTA 160
The most powerful telescopic model in the AP range: 285 to 405 cm of reach and a 1.4 kW motor for tall trees.
STIHL Battery Pole Pruners Compared

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HTA 30 | AS | 190–280 cm telescopic | approx. 3 kg | 0.30 kW | 20 cm |
| HTA 50 | AK | 280 cm (330 cm with extension) | 3.6 kg | 0.6 kW | 25 cm |
| HTA 66 | AP | 240 cm fixed | 3.3 kg | 0.85 kW | 25 cm |
| HTA 100 | AP | 182 cm fixed | approx. 3 kg | 1.1 kW | 30 cm |
| HTA 150 | AP | 196 cm fixed | 4.7 kg | 1.4 kW | 30 cm |
| HTA 160 | AP | 285–405 cm telescopic | 6.7 kg | 1.4 kW | 30 cm |
Figures are from STIHL and Gustharts product pages. Weights are without battery. Reach figures are total tool length; your working height is higher. The HTA 100, 150 and 160 cut branches up to about 20 cm in diameter.
What's New in the Range
The newest additions are at the professional end. The HTA 100 is a light, fixed-shaft AP model aimed at arborists who prune and thin all day. The HTA 150 adds a 1.4 kW motor to a short rigid shaft, and the HTA 160 puts the same power on a telescopic shaft for taller trees. At the homeowner end, the HTA 50 is the first STIHL pole pruner on the AK System, so anyone with an AK battery already has the battery side sorted.
If you're choosing between the pro models, the difference is mostly about shaft and weight: fixed shafts (HTA 100, HTA 150) are lighter and more precise, and the telescopic HTA 160 lets you work on tall and short trees with one tool.
The Reviews

STIHL HTA 50
9.0 / 10A lightweight, two-piece pole pruner that reaches about 4 m of branch height with 280 cm of tool length, or 330 cm with the optional extension. It's the first pole pruner in the AK System, so it shares batteries with the rest of the AK range.
- 0.6 kW motor, 25 cm bar, 3.6 kg without battery
- Up to 25, 45 or 60 minutes on an AK 10, AK 20 or AK 30 S
- Tool-free chain adjustment, branch hook and split shaft for storage

STIHL HTA 30
8.0 / 10The lightest, quietest way in. A telescopic shaft that adjusts from 190 to 280 cm without tools, a 20 cm bar and AS 2 batteries that are shared with STIHL's smaller garden tools.
- 0.30 kW, cuts branches up to about 17 cm
- Up to 28 minutes and around 140 cuts per charge on two AS 2 batteries
- Quiet enough that STIHL says hearing protection isn't needed

STIHL HTA 66
8.5 / 10The one with a head that tilts. An articulating head (−45° to +70°) lets you reach awkward branch angles from the ground, on a fixed 240 cm shaft at just 3.3 kg without battery.
- 0.85 kW brushless motor, 25 cm bar, IPX4 splash resistance
- Up to 42 minutes on an AP 200
- Sold as a tool only, so you need an AP battery and charger

STIHL HTA 100 New
9.2 / 10A light professional pruner built for all-day thinning and pruning. It has a fixed 182 cm shaft, a redesigned gearbox for a clearer view of the cut, and a 1.1 kW brushless motor with constant power.
- 30 cm bar, cuts branches up to about 20 cm
- Up to 42 minutes (around 260 cuts) on an AP 200.0 P
- Low noise, suited to residential and noise-sensitive sites

STIHL HTA 150 New
9.4 / 10A short, rigid 196 cm shaft with a 1.4 kW brushless motor. It's built for forestry, thinning and fruit tree pruning, where you want control and cutting power more than extreme reach.
- 30 cm bar, cuts branches and trees up to about 20 cm
- 4.7 kg without battery, LED display on the control handle
- Protective foot and branch hook as standard

STIHL HTA 160 New
9.5 / 10STIHL's most powerful battery pole pruner: a 1.4 kW motor on a 285 to 405 cm telescopic shaft with a rigid square profile. STIHL gives it a working height of about 5 m for thinning treetops.
- 30 cm bar, cuts branches up to about 20 cm
- 6.7 kg without battery, recommended with the AP 300.0 P
- Splashproof to IPX4, branch hook and protective foot as standard

Battery Runtime Guide
Runtimes are STIHL's figures at power level 1 under test conditions. Real working time depends on branch thickness, how often you cut and the temperature. The AP batteries can also be run from a backpack battery for a full day's work. See our ALLPRO vs AP 300 S guide for the newest AP packs.
How to Choose
Start with the battery system you already own. The HTA 30 runs on AS batteries, the HTA 50 on AK, and the HTA 66, 100, 150 and 160 on AP. If you already have a batch of AP batteries, an AP pruner costs far less than the headline price suggests. See our AP System page, AK System page and batteries and chargers collection.
Fixed or telescopic? Fixed shafts (HTA 66, 100, 150) are lighter, better balanced and more accurate. Telescopic ones (HTA 30, 160) give you reach options, but add weight and a bit of flex when extended.
Think about branch size. The HTA 30 handles branches up to about 17 cm. The 1.1 and 1.4 kW professional models cut up to about 20 cm.
Think about weight over a full day. A 6 kg tool held overhead feels very different at the end of the day to a 3 kg one. Professionals who prune all day should look at the HTA 100, or use a harness with the heavier models.
Safety first. Pole pruning puts the cut above your head. Wear a helmet, eye protection and hearing protection where required, keep a clear drop zone, never work near power lines and don't use a pole pruner from a ladder. Branches can fall unpredictably, so plan each cut. If you're doing regular tree work, make sure you're trained for it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best STIHL battery pole pruner for a homeowner?
The HTA 50 is the best fit for most gardens. It reaches about 4 m of branch height, weighs 3.6 kg without a battery and runs on the AK System. If you only prune small shrubs and low branches occasionally, the lighter HTA 30 is a cheaper way in.
Which pole pruner is best for professional tree work?
The HTA 150 and HTA 160 have the most power, at 1.4 kW. Choose the HTA 150 for a short rigid shaft and control, or the HTA 160 for 285 to 405 cm of reach. The HTA 100 is the lightest professional option for all-day pruning.
Do I need to buy a battery and charger separately?
Usually yes for AP models. The HTA 66, 100, 150 and 160 are sold as tools only. The HTA 30 and HTA 50 have bundle options that include batteries and a charger. Check the option you select on each product page.
Can I use my existing STIHL battery on a pole pruner?
Only if it's the same system. AS batteries fit the HTA 30, AK batteries fit the HTA 50, and AP batteries fit the other models. Batteries from different systems aren't interchangeable.
How thick a branch can a battery pole pruner cut?
The HTA 30 cuts branches up to about 17 cm. The HTA 100, 150 and 160 are rated up to about 20 cm. In practice, a pole pruner is best for thinning and smaller branches, and thicker limbs should be taken in sections.
Is a battery pole pruner as powerful as a petrol one?
The professional AP models are designed to match petrol performance in everyday pruning. STIHL compares the HTA 160's cutting power with its HT 135 petrol pole pruner. They're also much quieter and have no exhaust or fuel to handle.
When is the best time to prune with a pole pruner?
Late autumn through winter is the usual window for most deciduous trees, because the structure is visible and the tree is dormant. Some trees, such as stone fruit, are better pruned at other times, so check the species first.
