Type A vs Type C: Which Protection Do You Need
Type A trousers protect the front of the legs only, tested against a chainsaw contacting from the front — the standard requirement for ground-based cutting where the saw is always in front of you. Type C wraps protection all the way around the leg, because climbing changes your orientation relative to the saw constantly and a front-only design can leave you exposed. If you climb at all, Type C is the requirement; if you're strictly ground-based, Type A is lighter and cooler for the same legal protection.
Understanding the Class Rating
Class 1, 2 and 3 relate to chain speed protection, not how much fabric is used — Class 1 covers chain speeds up to 20 m/s, Class 2 up to 24 m/s, and Class 3 up to 28 m/s. Higher class doesn't automatically mean better; it means protection against a faster saw, which typically means more layers and more weight. Match the class to the actual saws you run rather than defaulting to the highest number available.
Fit, Weight & Wearing It All Day
Chainsaw protective fabric adds bulk and weight no matter the brand, but how that's distributed varies a lot between Arbortec, Pfanner, STIHL and STEIN designs. A pair that fits well and moves with you reduces fatigue over a full day far more than a marginal difference in class rating — try before committing where possible, since sizing runs differently across brands.
