What Makes a Chainsaw Helmet Different?
A chainsaw helmet combines three certified protection systems in a single unit: EN 397 head impact protection, EN 352 hearing protection via integrated ear defenders, and EN 1731 face protection via a mesh or polycarbonate visor. Managing three separate PPE items - hard hat, ear defenders and face shield - during chainsaw work is impractical and increases the risk of one component being left off. Petzl Arborist Helmets
Petzl is a French manufacturer producing a range of arborist and climbing helmets including the Petzl Vertex and Petzl Strato. Petzl arborist helmets are designed for combined tree climbing and chainsaw work, with attachment points for chinstraps, headtorches and hearing protection accessories. The Petzl Strato Vent is a ventilated climbing helmet widely used by UK arborists for aerial work in warm conditions. Petzl helmets integrate with the Petzl Vertex and Strato ear defender and visor accessory range.
STIHL Chainsaw Helmets
STIHL produce a professional chainsaw helmet with integrated mesh visor and ear defenders, available exclusively through authorised STIHL dealers including Gustharts. The STIHL chainsaw helmet meets EN 397, EN 352 and EN 1731 standards and represents a competitively priced entry point into integrated chainsaw head protection for domestic and professional users. The STIHL helmet is popular with homeowners and occasional users who require a certified combined system at a lower price point than the PROTOS range.
Choosing the Right Chainsaw Helmet
For professional arborists working at height daily: PROTOS Integral Arborist - maximum comfort, modular accessories, climbing attachment point. For professional ground-based and forestry work: PROTOS Integral Forest or equivalent Pfanner model. For professional tree climbing with a more compact helmet profile: Petzl Vertex or Strato with certified visor and ear defenders. For domestic users and occasional professional use: STIHL chainsaw helmet. All helmets must meet EN 397, EN 352 and EN 1731 as a minimum for chainsaw operation in the UK.
EN 397, EN 352 and EN 1731 - Chainsaw Helmet Standards
EN 397 is the industrial safety helmet standard covering impact protection and penetration resistance. EN 352 covers hearing protectors - ear defenders must meet EN 352-3 for helmet-mounted units. EN 1731 covers mesh face protection - the visor must pass an impact resistance test at the stated class. A compliant chainsaw helmet displays all three standard codes on the shell or suspension band. Some helmets additionally carry EN 12492 (mountaineering helmets) which provides additional side-impact protection relevant for aerial arborist work.
