Our story: three generations of chainsaw experience
From a 700 sq ft chainsaw workshop to one of the North East's largest specialist arborist and STIHL stores.
-
1938
Jim Gusthart starts work in the timber trade.
-
1985
Jim and Robert, who had spent 16 years selling and repairing chainsaws together at timber merchant H. Irwin & Son, buy the chainsaw side of the business when its owner retires. They open Gusthart's Chainsaw Centre as a STIHL dealer and repair centre in a 700 sq ft unit at Milkhope Centre, a converted 19th-century farm at Blagdon, Northumberland.
-
1996
After Jim's death, Robert is joined by his brother-in-law Michael, a former car mechanic. Michael's son Phil joins straight from school a few years later.
-
Early 2000s
The arborist range starts almost by accident. A customer asks for a harness, Robert sources one, then orders two so there is a spare. A connection through Lyon Equipment helps Gusthart's become a Petzl dealer, and the range grows from there.
-
17 Sept 2003
Gustharts.com opens, bringing the same range and advice to customers across the UK.
-
Nov 2012
The business moves into a purpose-built base 100 yards from the original unit, still at Milkhope Centre.
-
2018
The business is incorporated as Gustharts Limited, with Robert and Phil as directors.
-
2020 to 2021
Online sales surge during COVID, and in November 2021 Storm Arwen leaves the site without power for five days over Black Friday. The team keeps orders moving by head torch.
-
Today
Arborist equipment is now more than half of the business, supported by a team of 15 across the shop floor, workshop and stockroom, with backgrounds in arboriculture, climbing and engineering.
