How and Why You Should Clean Your STIHL Chainsaw

Each use leaves behind sap, oil and dust that can affect performance. Resin and dirt buildup increases wear on the bar, chain and sprocket, and restricts airflow, causing overheating. Cleaning after each use ensures smooth running and extends your tool’s lifespan.

Always make sure your saw cannot start up accidentally:

• For electric models — unplug from mains.
• For cordless — remove the battery and engage the chain brake.
• For petrol — switch off the engine, allow to cool, and apply the chain brake.

Use a soft brush and cloth with cleaning agents to remove resin, oil and debris. Focus on:

• The air intake slots and ventilation channels — blockage can cause overheating.
• The sprocket area — remove dust and grit around the drive.
• Guide bar groove, oil outlet/inlet channels — clear any build-up with a file or solvent.

Clean oil ports, chain grooves and housing after every use for long-term reliability.

Before storing your chainsaw for a longer period:

• Remove and clean chain and guide bar.
• Spray both with care oil and store separately.
• Clean vents, air slits and filters using brush or compressed air.
• Empty fuel tanks on petrol saws and run carburettor dry.
