When to Sharpen Your Mower Blade
Maintain a perfectly cut lawn by keeping your mower blade sharp and balanced.
Recognising When to Sharpen
If you take pride in your green, healthy lawn, it’s disappointing to see uneven or ragged grass after mowing. This is a clear sign that your blade needs sharpening. To avoid this, regularly inspect your mower blade and keep it sharp.
Inspect the blade regularly: Don’t wait until your mowing results decline. Check your blade frequently for dullness or damage.
Replace a damaged blade: If you find any cracks or bends, replace the blade instead of sharpening it.
Sharpening frequency: Even with normal use, sharpen the blade every 20–25 hours of operation to ensure optimal performance.
Should You Sharpen It Yourself or Go Professional?
Sharpening and balancing mower blades correctly takes skill and precision. STIHL recommends having your blade sharpened by a professional dealer to ensure a safe, high-quality result.
STIHL Dealer Service: Professionals have the right tools and balancing equipment, ensuring your blade performs like new. However, if you have the proper tools, you can follow our guide below to sharpen it yourself.
Sharpening the Blade Yourself
Every time you sharpen a mower blade, it must also be balanced to prevent vibrations and potential motor damage. Use a lawn mower blade balancer — visual estimation isn’t accurate enough. Note that damage caused by an unbalanced blade is not covered by warranty.
Professional Blade Sharpening
As a STIHL dealer we can sharpen your blade as part of routine mower servicing. You can also remove the blade yourself and take it to a dealer for sharpening.
STIHL Professional Tip: Always have your mower blade sharpened by a professional with the correct tools and expertise.
Step-by-Step: How to Sharpen Your Lawn Mower Blade
Materials you'll need:
- Vice
- Work gloves
- Spanner
- Monkey wrench / pipe wrench
- Workshop files or grinding stone
- Balancer
Step 1: Power Off and Secure the Mower
Ensure the mower cannot start accidentally. - For electric mowers: unplug the cable. - For cordless models: remove the battery. - For petrol models: disconnect the spark plug.
Step 2: Access the Blade
For electric mowers, you can safely tip them upside down. For petrol mowers, tilt no more than 45°, keeping the air filter at the top to avoid oil leakage.
Step 3: Remove the Blade
The bolts are right-hand threaded; loosen them by turning anti-clockwise. Always wear gloves and secure the blade with a block or have someone assist you.
Step 4: Clean and Inspect
Remove grass or debris with a scraper or wire brush. If you spot cracks or deep notches, replace the blade instead of sharpening.
Step 5: Sharpen
Clamp the blade in a vice with padding (e.g., old leather) and sharpen using a file or whetstone. File in one direction, maintaining a 30° angle.
STIHL Tip: Rubbing chalk on the file can produce a smoother edge finish.
Step 6: Balance the Blade
Place the blade on a balancer — if it tilts to one side, remove more material from the heavier side until level.
Before handling blades, always disconnect power and wear protective gloves and safety glasses.
Never work with an active mower and always double-check that it’s secured against accidental startup.
For maximum safety and precision, STIHL recommends professional sharpening at an authorised dealer.
