Storing Petrol-Driven Brushcutters

Keep your STIHL grass trimmer or brushcutter in top condition with these essential storage tips for petrol, cordless and electric models.

Storage Preparation: Empty the Petrol Tank

Before long-term storage, clean your brushcutter thoroughly and completely empty the fuel tank. Let the engine run on idle until it stops — this ensures the carburettor is dry and prevents stale fuel from causing blockages.

Storage Preparation: Clean Cutting Attachment and Guard

Remove dried grass and debris from the guard with a stiff brush. Clean the cutting attachment, and if you’re using a metal cutting blade, apply STIHL Multispray for corrosion protection.

Correct Storage Position

Avoid leaving your brushcutter lying on the ground for long periods, as the polymer guard may deform under the machine’s weight. Store the tool so that no weight rests on the guard or cutting head to prevent damage.

Storing Electric Brushcutters

For electric brushcutters, unplug from the mains and secure the cable around the handle. Clean the power tool thoroughly, paying attention to air intake slots and external housings.

General Storage Tips

Whether petrol, battery or electric, these tips will help keep your brushcutter and accessories in great condition year-round.

  • Store mowing lines in water to maintain flexibility. Remove the spool and leave it submerged until next use.
  • STIHL PolyCut blades can be treated the same way to keep them supple.
  • Remove and clean metal blades; apply anti-corrosion spray and check for damage.
  • Hang your brushcutter for best storage — this saves space and prevents deformation.
