Buyer's Guide

Belts & Braces Buyer's Guide

A loaded tool belt puts real weight on trousers not built to carry it, and standard belt loops can fail under that load. This guide covers braces vs belt alone, the different attachment styles, and building a full tool-carrying setup.

Why Standard Belt Loops Aren't Enough

A loaded tool belt — secateurs, radio, spare battery, wedges — puts real weight on trousers not designed to carry it, and standard belt loops can fail or slip during a long day of bending and climbing. Purpose-built chainsaw braces and belts are reinforced specifically for this load rather than adapted from general workwear.

Braces vs Belt: Where the Weight Goes

Braces distribute a loaded belt's weight across the shoulders instead of concentrating it all on the waist, reducing strain over a full day of carrying tools. A reinforced belt alone keeps things simpler and less restrictive across the shoulders, at the cost of putting more load directly on the hips. Heavier loads favour braces; lighter kit works fine with a good belt alone.

Button-On vs Clip-On vs Velcro Braces

Button-on braces attach directly to buttons sewn into compatible chainsaw trousers, giving the most secure connection but only working with trousers that have the matching buttons. Clip-on and Velcro styles attach more universally to a standard waistband, more flexible across different trouser brands but with a marginally less secure connection under heavy load. Check your trousers' attachment points before choosing a brace style.

Building a Full Tool Belt Setup

A tool belt with integrated harness and holsters (Oregon Tool Belt) combines carrying capacity and weight distribution in one purpose-built unit, worth considering if you're setting up from scratch rather than adding braces to an existing belt. See our Forestry Belts & Holsters range for the individual holsters and pouches to build out a modular setup.
