Climbing Carabiners & Arborist Connectors Buyer's Guide

From screwgate and auto-locking carabiners for personal climbing connections to swivel connectors, mini carabiners and high-load steel rigging connectors, this guide covers the full carabiner and connector range at Gustharts — helping arborists choose the right connector for every point in a climbing or rigging system.

Screwgate vs Auto-Locking Carabiners

Screwgate carabiners use a manually operated screw collar that locks the gate closed - the user must unscrew before opening. Reliable and simple, they are widely used for permanent anchor connections and rope-to-saddle attachment. Auto-locking carabiners (including double-action and triple-action twist-lock designs) lock automatically when the gate closes - reducing the risk of accidental gate opening under dynamic loading. For high-frequency connections and disconnections during climbing, auto-locking designs improve both safety and efficiency.

Steel vs Aluminium Carabiners

Steel carabiners offer higher wear resistance and greater gate strength, making them preferred for rigging anchor points and high-cycle rope-running applications where aluminium would wear prematurely. Aluminium carabiners are significantly lighter - critical for arborists carrying multiple connectors in the canopy where cumulative weight affects fatigue over a working day. Most arborists use aluminium for personal climbing connections and steel for rigging and ground-level anchor applications. All carabiners at Gustharts carry EN 362 certification regardless of material.

DMM Carabiners

DMM is a Welsh manufacturer producing precision climbing hardware trusted by arborists and rope access professionals across the UK. The DMM Xsre is a compact, lightweight screwgate carabiner widely used for arborist saddle connections. The DMM Ultra O is an oval screwgate for rigging plate and pulley attachment. DMM also produce the Revolver (a pulley-carabiner hybrid for rope-running efficiency) and a wide range of professional rigging connectors. All DMM carabiners are manufactured in Wales to ISO 9001 quality standards.

Petzl Carabiners and Connectors

Petzl is a French manufacturer producing a comprehensive range of carabiners and connectors for arborist and rope access applications. The Petzl Am'D and Petzl Attache are widely used screwgate connectors for saddle and system connections. The Petzl OK Triact-Lock is an asymmetric oval auto-locking carabiner suited to pulley and descender attachment. Petzl connectors are designed to integrate with the Petzl ascender, descender and saddle range for a fully compatible climbing system.

Swivel Carabiners and Connectors

A swivel carabiner incorporates a rotating body or connector between the gate and the attachment point, allowing the rope or lanyard to rotate freely under load without transferring twist to the climber or system. Swivels are particularly important in SRT climbing where the rope can accumulate twist during ascent and descent. They are also used in rigging systems where timber sections rotate during lowering. Swivel carabiners and separate swivel connectors are available from ISC, Petzl and Rock Exotica at Gustharts.

Mini Carabiners and Accessory Connectors

Mini carabiners and small-format connectors are used for tool attachment, equipment organisation, gear loops and low-load connections in arborist systems. They should not be used as primary load-bearing connectors in climbing or rigging unless rated and certified for that application. STEIN and Petzl produce mini carabiners and accessory clips for professional arborist use. Always check the kN rating and EN certification before using any carabiner in a load-bearing application.

EN 362 - The Carabiner Standard for Arborists

EN 362 is the European standard for connectors used in personal protective equipment against falls from height. All carabiners used as primary connectors in arborist climbing and rigging systems must carry EN 362 certification as a minimum. The standard specifies major axis strength (typically 20-25kN), minor axis strength and open-gate strength. Always verify the EN 362 marking and kN rating on any carabiner before use in a climbing or rigging system. Never use decorative or non-certified carabiners in arborist or rope access applications, regardless of their apparent strength.
