Fuel, Oil & Combination Cans Buyer's Guide

Getting fuel mix and bar oil right keeps two-stroke engines running well and chains properly lubricated — here's what to know before your next fill-up.

Two-Stroke Fuel Mixing

Petrol chainsaws, brushcutters and hedge trimmers need a precise two-stroke fuel-to-oil ratio — too little oil risks engine damage, too much causes fouling and poor running. A proper mixing bottle takes the guesswork out of getting the ratio right.

Pre-Mixed vs Mix-It-Yourself

Stihl's MotoMix pre-mixed fuel removes the risk of getting the ratio wrong and stores far longer than pump petrol without degrading — a good choice for machines used occasionally or left standing between seasons.

Bar & Chain Oil

Bar and chain oil lubricates the chain as it runs, reducing friction and wear on both bar and chain — never run a chainsaw without it, and match the oil grade to the season, as it needs to flow properly in cold weather too.

Combination Cans for Fuel & Oil

A combination can keeps fuel and chain oil separated in one container, making it easier to carry both to the job and refuel without mixing them up — a practical choice for anyone regularly working away from the van.

Four-Stroke Engine Oil

Four-stroke machines like some mowers and pressure washers need standard engine oil rather than a fuel mix — check your machine's manual for the correct oil grade and change interval.

Storage & Safety

Store fuel in approved containers, away from direct sunlight and ignition sources, and don't keep mixed two-stroke fuel for more than a few months as it degrades and can cause starting problems.

Choosing the Right Mix Ratio

Most Stihl petrol tools run a 50:1 fuel-to-oil ratio, but always check your specific model's manual — using the wrong ratio is one of the most common causes of premature engine wear on two-stroke machines.
