Log Saw Horse & Wooden Sawhorse Buyer's Guide

Whether you need a stable wooden saw horse for fixed firewood processing or a foldable steel log sawhorse for site work, this guide covers both options - STIHL and Oregon - to help you choose the right model for safe, efficient chainsaw cutting and timber support.

Wooden vs Steel Sawhorses

Wooden sawhorses - like the STIHL Wooden Sawhorse - are the traditional choice for log cutting: heavy, stable and kind to chainsaw chains. Steel foldable sawhorses, like the Oregon Steel Foldable Log Sawhorse, pack flat for easy transport and storage, suiting contractors and mobile firewood processors.

Choosing the Right Sawhorse for the Job

For fixed outdoor log processing and firewood preparation, a heavy wooden sawhorse gives the most stable cutting platform. For site work, van storage or processing logs in multiple locations, a foldable steel log horse is more practical. Both models suit chainsaw cutting of firewood and timber up to standard log lengths.

Log Saw Horse for Chainsaw Cutting

A log saw horse holds timber securely at a safe working height, reducing fatigue and the risk of the chainsaw contacting the ground. Both the STIHL wooden and Oregon steel models are designed for chainsaw use - the X-frame design keeps legs clear of the cutting zone and allows logs to be repositioned quickly between cuts.

Safe Sawhorse Use

Always position the sawhorse on level, stable ground before use. Never cut directly through a log into the sawhorse frame. Ensure PPE - chainsaw trousers, boots, helmet and gloves - is worn during all chainsaw cutting operations. Inspect the sawhorse for damage before each use and retire any unit with cracked joints or bent steel sections.
