STIHL Magnesium Piston Technology
Lightweight. Durable. Powerful. Discover how STIHL’s magnesium piston technology sets new standards for performance and reliability.
Precision-engineered STIHL magnesium piston for lightweight strength and durability.
Innovative Power Meets Lightweight Design
STIHL’s magnesium piston technology combines high strength with ultra-lightweight construction, delivering greater engine performance with reduced overall weight. The use of precision-engineered magnesium alloy significantly cuts down reciprocating mass, improving acceleration, efficiency and power transfer in professional-grade STIHL machines.
This innovation is the result of STIHL’s in-house magnesium die-casting facility in Germany, one of the most advanced of its kind in Europe — allowing full control over material quality and production consistency.
Why Magnesium?
Magnesium is around 30% lighter than aluminium while maintaining exceptional strength. In small engines where every gram matters, this weight reduction directly improves balance, lowers vibration and allows for longer, more comfortable operation.
- High thermal conductivity for improved heat dissipation
- Excellent rigidity for better engine stability
- Corrosion-resistant surface with precision machining
- Enables compact engine design and reduced emissions
How STIHL Magnesium Pistons Improve Performance
The magnesium piston’s reduced mass enables faster acceleration of moving engine components, leading to higher torque and smoother power output. Less inertia also reduces internal friction, extending engine life and improving efficiency.
Combined with STIHL’s advanced combustion systems such as 2-MIX and 4-MIX® technology, magnesium pistons help achieve optimal fuel economy and outstanding durability under continuous load.

Magnesium in STIHL Tools
You’ll find magnesium pistons and components integrated across the STIHL range, from chainsaws and cut-off machines to brushcutters and blowers. By minimising engine mass and enhancing temperature control, these tools achieve an ideal balance of power-to-weight ratio and longevity.
This same expertise is also applied to magnesium crankcases, cylinder covers, and housings, offering additional rigidity and strength at a fraction of the weight.
STIHL Magnesium vs Conventional Aluminium Pistons
| Feature | Conventional Aluminium Piston | STIHL Magnesium Piston |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Heavier, increases engine inertia | 30% lighter for quicker response |
| Heat Dissipation | Moderate | High — excellent thermal conductivity |
| Durability | Good under normal loads | Superior under extreme performance and heat |
| Fuel Efficiency | Standard efficiency | Improved due to lower internal resistance |
| Vibration Control | Moderate vibration levels | Reduced vibration, smoother operation |
