EN ISO 11393-2:2019 Class 1 Design C is the current European and international standard for chainsaw protective trousers, superseding the earlier EN 381-5 (you may see some garments still referenced under EN 381-5 — both the old and current standard are referenced here to confirm compatibility). Class 1 certifies protection against chainsaw cutting speeds up to 20 m/s — the standard for the majority of professional chainsaw use in arboriculture and forestry. Design C means the garment provides all-round 360° protection covering the full circumference of both legs — front and back — as opposed to Design A (front leg protection only). Design C is required for any work where the chainsaw may approach the leg from any direction, including climbing, high-reaching work and confined-space felling.

EN ISO 20471:2013+A1:2016 Class 2 is the high-visibility clothing standard. Class 2 requires a minimum of 0.50m² of fluorescent material and 0.13m² of retroreflective material per garment — sufficient for road and most rail environments. The ULTRALIGHT 1C uses fluorescent orange fabric with retroreflective strips on the lower leg to meet this requirement.

RIS-3279-TOM Issue 1 is the UK Network Rail Railway Industry Standard for high-visibility garments worn on or near railway infrastructure. Type C vs Type A - Which Do You Need?

Solidur produces the ULTRALIGHT in both Type A (front protection only) and Type C (all-round 360° protection). Choosing the right design depends on your work pattern and risk assessment.

If you climb trees with a chainsaw, or your risk assessment identifies rear-leg exposure as a credible hazard, the Type C (ULPHRI1C) is the required garment.
