STIHL Strimmer & Brushcutter Buyer's Guide
From the FS 38 domestic strimmer to the FS 560 C-EM professional brushcutter, and from the FSA 30 compact battery trimmer to the FSA 135 professional cordless model, this guide covers the full STIHL strimmer and brushcutter range to help you choose the right petrol or battery model, cutting head and line for your application.
STIHL Petrol Strimmers
STIHL petrol strimmers cover the full FS range from domestic to professional. The FS 38 and FS 40 are lightweight domestic models for garden trimming. The FS 55 and FS 56 step up to light professional use. The FS 91, FS 94 and FS 131 are professional strimmers for grounds maintenance and heavy vegetation. The FS 460 C-EM and FS 561 C-EM are high-displacement professional brushcutters for demanding daily use.
STIHL Battery Strimmers
STIHL battery strimmers run on the AK and AP Systems. The FSA 30 and FSA 57 are compact cordless grass trimmers for small gardens on the AK System. The FSA 60, FSA 70, FSA 80 and FSA 86 scale up for professional grounds maintenance on the AP System. The FSA 130 and FSA 135 are professional-grade battery strimmers for sustained daily use with AP 300 S and AP 500 S batteries.
STIHL Brushcutters
STIHL brushcutters use metal blades rather than nylon line for clearing dense scrub, brambles and woody vegetation. The FS 94, FS 240, FS 360 and FS 460 C-EM accept grass blades, saw blades and clearing blades via the standard STIHL brushcutter drive adapter. Brushcutters require Type C (wrap-around) trousers and full PPE for safe operation with metal cutting attachments.
STIHL Kombi System
The STIHL Kombi system uses a single KM engine unit with interchangeable attachments - strimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer, pole pruner, blower and more. Current KM engines include the KM 94 R, KM 111 R and KM 131 R. To identify a replacement part for a Kombi: 1. Check the model plate on the engine unit. 2. Note the model code and serial number. 3. Browse the STIHL Kombi spare parts collection or contact Gustharts for part identification.
Petrol vs Battery Strimmer - Which is Right for You?
Petrol strimmers deliver unlimited runtime and higher power for professional daily use, larger areas and thick vegetation. Battery strimmers offer quiet, low-maintenance operation with no fuel mixing - best for noise-sensitive areas, residential work and domestic gardens. For most professional grounds maintenance teams the practical answer is a petrol model for main work and a battery strimmer for detail trimming near buildings and boundaries.
Strimmer Line and Cutting Heads
STIHL strimmers use 2mm, 2.4mm and 3mm nylon strimmer line depending on the model and application. The AutoCut C 5-2 head suits domestic FS and FSA models; the AutoCut C 26-2 and C 36-2 suit professional FS strimmers. Round line suits general trimming; twisted and square profiles give a cleaner cut in tougher vegetation. Genuine STIHL strimmer line and replacement heads are stocked at Gustharts for all current models.
Strimmer and Brushcutter PPE
STIHL and PUWER regulations require appropriate PPE when operating strimmers and brushcutters. Strimmer trousers or brushcutter trousers provide leg protection from debris; safety footwear, eye protection and hearing protection are required for all powered trimmer use. When using a metal brushcutter blade, Type C wrap-around trousers and reinforced safety boots are required as a minimum.
