STIHL Air Filter Systems

When an engine is running, it continuously draws in air for combustion. This air must be clean to ensure smooth performance and minimal wear. The STIHL air filter system removes dust, dirt, and debris such as wood chips, concrete particles, and other fine materials before they reach the engine. By filtering the air effectively, STIHL ensures long-lasting performance and reduced maintenance across its tool range.

Many STIHL chainsaws and all STIHL cut-off machines feature advanced long-life air filter systems, engineered to extend cleaning intervals and maximise tool life.

Most STIHL chainsaws feature a long-life air filter system with pre-separation routing to relieve the load on the main filter. Here’s how it works:

• The intake air is accelerated by the flywheel, causing heavier particles to separate and be ejected.
• Only pre-cleaned air passes to the main filter, which ensures the engine receives clean air for combustion.
• The filter element can be adapted for various conditions — for example, a polyamide filter for cold weather, or an HD2 filter for high-dust environments.

The HD2 air filter features ultra-fine polyethylene pores, 70% smaller than conventional filters. It’s oil and water-repellent and forms an airtight seal to block unfiltered air.

These filters are washable and reusable. To clean, simply spray with STIHL Varioclean, allow to soak, rinse with water, and dry before reinstalling.

STIHL Tip: Many chainsaw models can be upgraded from a standard fleece filter to the HD2 filter variant.

STIHL cut-off machines use a sophisticated cyclone air routing system that dramatically extends the service life of the air filter. This system includes:

• Cyclone routing: Removes around 80% of dust from intake air before it reaches the filter.
