What is DWR?

DWR stands for Durable Water Repellence, the chemical coating applied to a fabric to increase its ability to shed water. It helps prevent your garment absorbing water (known as "wetting out"), which makes the garment heavy and slow to dry and impacts breathability.

The Importance of Durable Water Repellence

When water hits a properly maintained waterproof jacket, it beads up and runs off thanks to the DWR coating. A poorly maintained jacket will "wet out," with water soaking into the face fabric and disrupting moisture flow from within, which can leave the wearer feeling wet from trapped sweat rather than a leak.

• A DWR affects only the exterior of rainwear and is separate from a laminate or coating
• Its purpose is to protect the face fabric from becoming saturated and heavy
• It works by causing water to bead up and roll off the garment's exterior
• DWRs do not inhibit fabric breathability
• Abrasion, grime and laundering reduce DWR performance over time
• DWRs must be regularly cleaned and periodically renewed using spray-on or wash-in products

When Do DWRs Need Maintenance?

Test your rainwear by sprinkling water on the exterior. Does it bead up and roll off? If you give the fabric a strong shake, does most of the moisture fly off? If water sits on the fabric and that area darkens slightly, water is reaching the fibres and it's time to revive your DWR.

What is Hydrostatic Head?

Hydrostatic Head measures how water resistant a material is — specifically how tall a column of water the fabric can hold before water seeps through the weave. A rating of 10,000mm means the fabric can withstand water pressure equivalent to a 1.0m column before leaking. The higher the rating, the more water resistant the fabric.

What is MVTR?

MVTR stands for Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate, a measure of how much gaseous water vapour passes through the fabric barrier over a 24-hour period, tested in a chamber divided by the material with a dry atmosphere on one side and a moist atmosphere on the other.

How to Wash STEIN All Weather Jackets

Everyday dirt and residue can build up on clothing, affecting breathability and water repellency. Never wash water-resistant clothing with ordinary powder detergent or fabric softener — these chemicals break down fibre composition and strip the DWR coating. Use a cleaner designed specifically for technical outerwear, or a combined Wash & Proof product.

• Brush off loose mud or dirt before washing; fasten all zips and Velcro fasteners
• Make sure your washing machine's detergent compartment is free of residue — run a hot wash with nothing in it first if needed
• Pour the appropriate amount of performance cleaner into the detergent compartment
• Wash no more than two garments at a time, and not alongside other items
• Run a complete wash and rinse cycle at a maximum of 40°C — higher temperatures can damage taped seams and laminates
• Unfasten all zips after washing and air dry only — never tumble dry
• Reproof the garment if it starts absorbing rather than repelling water
• Always check the garment label for exact care details
