SRT Climbing Ropes
SRT (Single Rope Technique) climbing uses one rope fixed at the anchor point. SRT ropes are low-elongation lines designed to minimise bounce and maximise efficiency on ascent. Key models include the Teufelberger Xstatic and Yale Poison Ivy. SRT is increasingly preferred by professional arborists for efficiency on large trees.
DRT Climbing Ropes
DRT (Double Rope Technique) uses the rope doubled through the anchor, giving a mechanical advantage on ascent and a familiar feel for traditional arborist climbing. DRT climbing ropes - also called tree climbing ropes or arborist ropes - include the Teufelberger Multistar and Courant Bi-Color lines, available in 11mm and 13mm diameters.
Arborist Rope vs Rigging Rope
Arborist climbing ropes are designed for body-weight loads and the dynamic movement of climbing. Rigging ropes are built for heavier timber loads during dismantling and lowering - larger diameters, higher MBS, and different fibre constructions. Using a climbing rope for rigging is unsafe; the two categories are not interchangeable.
Choosing Rope Diameter and Length
Most arborist climbing ropes run 11mm or 13mm diameter. 11mm ropes are lighter for SRT work; 13mm suits DRT and gives a better feel through friction hitches. Standard lengths are 30m, 45m and 60m - choose based on tree height plus working tail. Most professional arborists carry a 45m or 60m line as standard.

Courant Climbing Ropes
Courant is a French climbing and arborist equipment brand trusted by tree surgeons across the UK. Rope Care and Inspection
Climbing ropes must be inspected before each use for core damage, sheath wear, glazing and chemical contamination. Wash with clean water and mild rope cleaner after use in sap or resin-heavy conditions. Retire any rope that has taken a significant shock load, shows core damage, or has reached its manufacturer service life - typically 10 years from manufacture.
