Arbortec AT4044 Mid-Range Chainsaw Trousers - Design C Class 1 - Grey

The Arbortec AT4044 is a Class 1 certified chainsaw trouser in Design C — all-round protection covering the front and back of both legs for ground-based felling, cross-cutting and forestry work. Engineered as Arbortec's accessible entry point into professional chainsaw PPE, it brings certified protection and practical durability together without the premium price of the Breatheflex range — making it the right choice for those entering the industry and for professionals equipping a fleet or replacing a trouser at a working price. A bi-stretch breathable crotch panel ensures freedom of movement during felling and limbing, a high-raised kidney panel guards against draught and debris, and heavy-duty YKK zips with downward-facing pocket access make daily wear practical alongside a harness. Hard-wearing coated panels protect high-wear zones, and the elasticated waistband with extra-wide belt loops ensures a secure fit through long working days. Available in XS–3XL and three leg lengths — short, regular and tall. In stock at Gustharts.

Arbortec Forestwear is a UK brand specialising in professional arborist and forestry PPE, with over 30 years of manufacturing experience. All AT4044 trousers are produced in Arbortec's own factory in Portugal, with design and testing carried out at their in-house innovation lab in the UK — quality and certification controlled under one roof throughout production.

⚠ Chainsaw protective trousers are life-safety PPE. Always confirm your risk assessment specifies the correct protection class and design before purchasing. Class 1 (20 m/s) Design C is the standard requirement for most ground-based felling and forestry operations in the UK.

Key Features

  • Design C all-round protection — Class 1 (20 m/s) — certified chainsaw protection covering the front and back of both legs; the standard requirement for ground-based felling and forestry operations
  • Bi-stretch breathable crotch panel — provides unrestricted freedom of movement during active felling, cross-cutting and ground-level work without restricting the protective structure
  • High-raised kidney panel — extended coverage across the lower back for protection against draught, debris and cold during sustained outdoor working
  • Heavy-duty YKK zips throughout — premium YKK on all pockets and fly closure for reliable daily hard-use performance; YKK specified rather than generic supplier zips
  • Downward-facing pocket zips — designed for use with a harness; downward orientation prevents snagging during harness-on working and improves access when kitted out for aerial work
  • Hard-wearing coated panels in high-wear zones — abrasion-resistant panels positioned where scrapes and site debris cause fastest wear during ground operations
  • Two large side pockets and rear pockets — practical tool storage for daily site use
  • Elasticated waistband with extra-wide belt loops — provides a comfortable, secure fit during extended wearing with a work belt
  • Three leg length options — short, regular and tall — fit straight from the bag without tailoring
  • Available XS to 3XL — full professional range
  • Made in Portugal in Arbortec's own facility — not third-party manufactured; design and testing at Arbortec's UK innovation lab

Understanding EN ISO 11393-2 and the Protection Designs

EN ISO 11393-2:2019 is the current standard for chainsaw protective trousers and over-trousers. It supersedes the earlier EN 381-5 standard — if you see older listings or documentation referencing EN 381-5 for chainsaw trousers, EN ISO 11393-2 is the current equivalent.

The standard defines three protection classes based on the chain speed the trouser must withstand in testing:

  • Class 1 — protection against chain speeds up to 20 m/s
  • Class 2 — protection against chain speeds up to 24 m/s
  • Class 3 — protection against chain speeds up to 28 m/s

Class 1 satisfies the requirement for the vast majority of ground-based UK arboricultural and forestry work. Class 2 or higher may be specified for certain contracts or high-speed saw applications.

The standard also defines protection designs by which part of the leg is covered:

  • Design A — front of the leg only; suited to climbing and aerial work where rear contact with the saw is unlikely
  • Design C — front and back of both legs; the standard requirement for ground operations where the saw is used at multiple angles and rear contact is a realistic hazard

Design A or Design C — AT4024 vs AT4044

The AT4024 and AT4044 are identical in construction, materials and price point. The only difference is the protection design. Both are Class 1 (20 m/s) and share the same YKK zips, bi-stretch crotch panel, coated panels, kidney panel and size range.

Feature AT4024 — Design A AT4044 — Design C (this product)
Protection area Front of the leg only Front and back of the leg
Protection class Class 1 — up to 20 m/s Class 1 — up to 20 m/s
Primary use Aerial / climbing work; situations where rear contact with the saw is low risk Ground-based felling, forestry and cross-cutting; where rear leg contact is a realistic risk
Required by Some aerial and climbing-specific risk assessments Most UK forestry and groundwork risk assessments; the common default for ground operations

If your risk assessment or employer specifies "all-round" or "Design C" protection, the AT4044 is the correct choice. If you work primarily at height with a top-handle saw and your risk assessment specifies Design A, the AT4024 is the equivalent trouser in Design A. If in doubt, Design C is the more conservative and more commonly required specification for UK arboricultural and forestry work. Contact Gustharts for advice if you are unsure which design your risk assessment requires.

Also Known As

The Arbortec AT4044 is also referred to as Arbortec chainsaw trousers, chainsaw protective trousers, Design C chainsaw trousers, Class 1 chainsaw bottoms and arborist chainsaw trousers. For ordering, reference the AT4044 in grey. The Design A equivalent is the AT4024. Select your waist size (XS–3XL) and leg length (short, regular or tall) before adding to basket.

Complete Your Kit

  • Chainsaw helmet systems — certified face, visor and hearing protection required for all chainsaw operation
  • Chainsaw boots (Class 3 / EN ISO 17249) — certified chainsaw protective footwear required alongside trousers for full lower-body compliance

FAQs

What is the difference between Design A and Design C chainsaw trousers?

Design A protects the front of the leg only — suitable for aerial and climbing work. Design C adds protection to the back of the leg, making it all-round protection for both legs. Design C is the standard requirement for ground-based felling, cross-cutting and most UK forestry operations. The AT4044 is Design C; the equivalent Design A trouser is the AT4024.

What does Class 1 mean?

Under EN ISO 11393-2:2019 (which supersedes EN 381-5), Class 1 means the trouser is certified to provide protection against chainsaw contact at speeds up to 20 m/s. This is the minimum requirement for most UK arboricultural and forestry operations.

What leg lengths are available?

Short, regular and tall — allowing a proper fit straight from the bag without the need for tailoring. Select your leg length alongside your waist size when adding to basket.

Why does the pocket design matter when wearing a harness?

Downward-facing pocket zips prevent snagging on harness straps and leg loops during work, and make pocket access easier when kitted out for aerial or saddle-based operations where harness straps cross the hip and thigh.

Where are Arbortec trousers made?

In Arbortec's own factory in Portugal. Design and testing are carried out at their in-house innovation lab in the UK. Production and certification are controlled under one roof throughout manufacturing.
