Silky Saw Buyer's Guide
From the Silky Zubat — the most widely used arborist pruning saw in the UK — to the compact Pocketboy, the long-reach Hayauchi and Hayate pole saws, and the specialist Gomtaro and Big Boy, this guide covers the full Silky range at Gustharts to help you choose the right saw, blade length and replacement blade for professional tree work.
Silky Zubat
The Silky Zubat is the most widely used professional arborist pruning saw in the UK. Available in 240mm, 270mm and 330mm blade lengths, with a curved blade and large aggressive teeth for fast pull-stroke cutting on green and seasoned timber. The Zubat 330 is the preferred choice for larger diameter branches; the Zubat 240 suits tighter canopy work. All Zubat models use impulse-hardened triple-cut teeth and fold safely into a rubberised handle.
Silky F180 and Pocketboy
The Silky F180 is a compact folding saw with an aggressive 180mm curved blade - ideal for saddle carry, tent-peg cutting and light pruning work where the Zubat is too large. The Silky Pocketboy is the most compact saw in the Silky range, available in 130mm, 150mm and 170mm blades, fitting in a jacket pocket for use as an emergency or detail saw. The Pocketboy 170 is the most popular size for arborists carrying a backup saw on the job.
Silky Gomtaro and Big Boy
The Silky Gomtaro is a straight-blade professional pruning saw available in 300mm and 360mm lengths - the straight blade gives more control for precise angled cuts and flush cuts against stem tissue. The Silky Big Boy is a large straight-blade saw designed for ground-level cutting of large diameter timber up to 200mm, widely used by forestry and woodland workers. The Big Boy converts to a pole saw head for extended reach applications.
Silky Pole Saws - Hayauchi and Hayate
The Silky Hayauchi is the leading long-reach pole saw for professional arborists, extending to 6.3m and 8.3m with an interchangeable curved saw blade. The Silky Hayate reaches 7.7m with a larger blade profile for faster cutting on branches up to 100mm diameter. Both models use sectional aluminium poles with secure locking collars and are supplied with a carry bag. Replacement blades for Hayauchi and Hayate are stocked at Gustharts.
Why Silky Saws Cut Faster Than Other Pruning Saws
Silky saws are manufactured in Japan using impulse-hardened teeth - a heat treatment process that makes the cutting edge significantly harder than the saw body, producing teeth that hold an edge up to 10x longer than conventionally ground saw teeth. Triple-cut tooth geometry creates three cutting edges per tooth, removing material faster on the pull stroke with less effort. These teeth cannot be resharpened - when they dull, replace the blade.
Silky Replacement Blades
Silky saw blades are consumable items - impulse-hardened teeth cannot be resharpened, so replace the blade when cutting speed drops. Gustharts stocks replacement blades for all major Silky models: Zubat 240, 270, 300 and 330; F180; Pocketboy 130, 150 and 170; Hayauchi and Hayate pole saw blades; Gomtaro 300 and 360. To fit: open the saw, unscrew the pivot bolt, remove the old blade, seat the new blade in the handle slot, and retighten the pivot bolt.
Choosing the Right Silky Saw for Arborist Work
For saddle carry and canopy work: Silky Zubat 240 or 270 as the primary saw; Silky Pocketboy 170 as a backup. For larger canopy branches and ground pruning: Silky Zubat 330. For flush cuts and precision work: Silky Gomtaro 300. For ground-level large timber: Silky Big Boy. For high branch work from the ground: Silky Hayauchi 6.3m or 8.3m. For maximum reach: Silky Hayate 7.7m. All models are stocked at Gustharts with fast UK delivery and free delivery over £75.
