Chain Pitch - .325, 3/8 and 3/4 Explained
Chain pitch is the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two, and must match your chainsaw's drive sprocket and guide bar. .325" pitch is used on most professional STIHL arborist chainsaws including the MS 261, MS 362, MS 462 and MS 500i. 3/8" pitch is used on domestic models including the MS 180, MS 211 and MS 251 and some professional saws. 3/4" pitch is used on heavy-duty professional bars for the MS 661 and MS 880. Always match chain pitch to the saw and bar specification on the data plate.
Full Chisel vs Semi Chisel Chains
Full chisel chains have square-cornered cutters that cut fast and aggressively through clean, seasoned hardwood - the choice for professional felling and timber processing in good conditions. Semi chisel chains have rounded corner cutters that stay sharper for longer in dirty, abrasive or frozen timber conditions and are more forgiving on occasional contact with soil or stone. For professional arborists cutting predominantly clean timber, full chisel is faster. For mixed conditions or firewood processing, semi chisel is more durable.

STIHL Rapid Super (RS) is a full chisel professional chain for maximum cutting speed. STIHL PM3 (Picco Micro 3) is a semi chisel narrow-kerf chain for lightweight top-handle arborist saws. STIHL PICCO chains are designed for the compact bar lengths used on arborist and domestic models. Rapid Duro (RD) is STIHL's tungsten carbide-tipped chain for abrasive conditions. Carbide and Tungsten Chainsaw Chains
Tungsten carbide chainsaw chains - including the STIHL Rapid Duro (RD) - are designed for cutting dirty, sandy or abrasive timber where standard steel chains dull within minutes. Carbide-tipped cutters last up to 4x longer in these conditions. Applications include root cutting, reclaimed timber, construction site timber, and wood with embedded grit or stone. Carbide chains cannot be hand-filed and require diamond grinding equipment to sharpen - replace when cutting performance drops significantly.
Choosing the Right Chain for Your Bar Length
A chainsaw chain must match three specifications: pitch (matches drive sprocket), gauge (matches bar groove width), and drive link count (matches bar length). The correct chain specification is printed on the guide bar and on the saw data plate. STIHL chains are labelled with all three specifications - for example, a chain for an MS 261 with a 40cm bar is typically .325" pitch, 1.6mm gauge, 67 drive links. Chainsaw Chain Oil and Bar Lubrication
All chainsaw chains require continuous lubrication from the bar oil system to prevent overheating, premature wear and bar groove damage. STIHL ForestPlus bar oil is a mineral-based oil suited to standard professional use. STIHL BioPlus is a biodegradable bar oil for environmentally sensitive sites. Always use the correct specification bar oil - engine oil and vegetable oil cause accelerated chain and bar wear and should not be substituted. Check the oil reservoir before each use and refill every time the fuel tank is filled.
When to Replace a Chainsaw Chain
Replace a chainsaw chain when: the chain has been sharpened to the minimum cutter depth marked on the cutter body; the depth gauges cannot be lowered further without compromising cutter geometry; the chain shows cracked, damaged or missing cutters or tie straps; or the chain has been in a severe kickback event. A worn chain causes the saw to work harder, increasing fuel consumption and bar wear.
