Type A Chainsaw Trousers Buyer's Guide

Type A chainsaw trousers protect the front of the leg for ground-based chainsaw work. This guide covers the difference between Type A and Type C protection, how to choose the right class rating for your saw, and the full brand range at Gustharts — Arbortec, Pfanner, STEIN, STIHL and more — all EN ISO 11393 certified.

Type A vs Type C Chainsaw Trousers - What's the Difference?

Type A chainsaw trousers protect the front of the leg only - both thighs, knees and shins. They are the standard choice for ground-based chainsaw work where the saw is operated below waist height. Type C chainsaw trousers (also called wrap-around or all-round protection) protect both the front and back of the leg and are required for arborists working at height, operating a saw above waist height, or where the risk assessment identifies rear-leg contact risk. For most ground-based felling and processing work, Type A is the correct and more comfortable choice.

Class 1, 2 and 3 - Chainsaw Trouser Class Ratings Explained

Chainsaw trouser class ratings indicate the maximum chain speed the trousers are tested against. Class 1 suits chains up to 20 m/s - appropriate for most domestic and light professional saws. Class 2 suits chains up to 24 m/s - required for most professional chainsaw models. Class 3 suits chains up to 28 m/s - required for high-speed professional felling saws. Under UK PUWER regulations, the trouser class must meet or exceed the chain speed of the saw being used. When in doubt, size up to the next class - you cannot be over-protected.

Arbortec Chainsaw Trousers

Arbortec is a UK manufacturer producing the most widely worn professional chainsaw trousers on UK arborist sites. The Arbortec Scafell Lite is a lightweight Class 2 Type C trouser for professional climbing arborists. The Arbortec Breatheflex Pro is a breathable, stretch-fabric Type C trouser available in Class 1, 2 and 3 - the most popular professional chainsaw trouser at Gustharts. Arbortec also produce Type A trousers for ground crew and a women's specific range with a female-fit pattern across multiple sizes.

Pfanner Chainsaw Trousers

Pfanner is an Austrian PPE manufacturer producing a professional chainsaw trouser range trusted by arborists across Europe. The Pfanner Gladiator and Pfanner Ventilation chainsaw trousers are available in Type A and Type C configurations in Class 1, 2 and 3. Pfanner chainsaw trousers are known for their robust outer fabric, comfortable cut and long service life under professional daily use. The Pfanner Ventilation Type C is one of the most specified summer-weight professional chainsaw trousers at Gustharts.

STEIN, STIHL and Specialist Brand Trousers

STEIN produce the Sentinel chainsaw trouser range - a robust, value-led option widely used by UK grounds maintenance and forestry teams in Class 1 and Class 2. STIHL produce their own branded chainsaw trousers in Type A and Type C configurations, available exclusively through authorised STIHL dealers including Gustharts. Specialist brands including Montbell, Clogger and ArbPro also produce high-performance chainsaw trousers stocked at Gustharts for arborists seeking lightweight or technical performance options.

Chainsaw Trouser Fit - Braces, Sizing and Comfort

Chainsaw trousers should fit over standard work trousers with room for movement at the knee during crouching and kneeling. Most professional chainsaw trousers are available in regular and long leg lengths and in waist sizes from 28 to 42 inches. Braces keep the waistband positioned correctly during active work and prevent the protective padding from shifting on the leg - all professional chainsaw trousers should be worn with braces. Lightweight fabrics (Breatheflex, Pfanner Ventilation) significantly reduce fatigue during extended wear in warm conditions.

EN ISO 11393 - The Chainsaw Trouser Standard Explained

EN ISO 11393 is the current international standard for protective clothing for users of hand-held chainsaws. It supersedes the earlier EN 381-5 standard and covers Type A (front protection) and Type C (all-round protection) in Class 1 (20 m/s), Class 2 (24 m/s) and Class 3 (28 m/s). All chainsaw trousers in the Gustharts range carry EN ISO 11393 certification and display the standard code, type and class on the garment label. UK employers are required under PUWER to ensure all chainsaw operators wear correctly rated and certified chainsaw leg protection.
