The Tatanka Splitting Axe 800mm - 2kg is a professional-grade splitting axe designed to deliver maximum splitting performance when processing firewood and large timber. Featuring an extended wedge-shaped head and a durable hickory handle, it provides the power and efficiency needed for demanding forestry, logging and woodland tasks.
Forged from C45 carbon steel, the European equivalent to AISI 1045 carbon steel, the axe head contains approximately 0.45% carbon, providing an excellent balance of toughness and edge retention. Each Tatanka axe is hand forged and hand finished before being heat treated, oil quenched and tempered along the cutting edge to produce a strong, dependable tool capable of withstanding heavy impact use.
The 800mm hickory handle offers excellent leverage while naturally absorbing vibration during repeated strikes. Combined with the extended wedge head, the design forces timber apart efficiently, making it ideal for splitting logs with less effort than a conventional chopping axe.

How to Care
- Maintain the original bevel angle when sharpening using a fine axe file followed by a sharpening stone.
- Keep the axe head clean and dry after use and apply axe wax, boiled linseed oil or a light maintenance oil to help prevent rust.
- Treat the hickory handle periodically with natural linseed oil or axe wax to help prevent drying and splitting.
- Always store the axe in a cool, dry place with a suitable leather sheath fitted.
- Inspect the head and handle before each use to ensure they remain secure and free from damage.
